Remote Associate Editor / Staff Editor (News & Live), The Athletic - Est. Salary: $40K - $68K

About the Role

The Athletic is hiring an Associate Editor or Staff Editor to collaborate with the newsroom on news and live coverage opportunities built around sporting events, breaking news, and high-impact feature storytelling. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of breaking news, live event coverage, social media, SEO, and trending concepts, and will collaborate with multiple reporters and editors, write original copy, and edit with speed and accuracy. 

Responsibilities

    • Write, edit and publish news stories and live coverage with speed and accuracy.

    • Collaborate with sport editors to launch live coverage around breaking news.

    • Coordinate with reporters in the field who are contributing to live and news coverage.

    • Have an understanding of search optimization and how to identify coverage opportunities.

    • Editing, producing and publishing news stories via a dedicated publishing process, including writing headlines and selecting photos.

    • Using real-time metrics to assess performance and adjust appropriately.

Requirements

    • 0-4+ years of professional journalism experience, preferably in a fast-paced news environment.

    • Knowledge of WordPress and basic functionality and comfort level operating in multiple CMS platforms.

    • Editing experience on news copy strongly preferred.

    • Photo editing skills, while not required, are a plus.

    • Familiarity with multiple social media platforms.

    • Ability to work nights and weekends required.

    • Interest and knowledge across a range of different sports.

    • This is a remote job based in the US or Canada.

The annual base salary range for this role is $40,000.00 - $68,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
